Star Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Synopsis:
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival mega corporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.
BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
Review:
The first book of the Illuminae Files is one that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. The book starts off on a planet with an illegal mining operation. The planet is invaded and then everything the main characters knew is no longer what they know now. The main character Kady is a bit rough around the edges. She is an amazing kick-butt character though. The main character has just broken up with her boyfriend, Ezra Mason, who is also a main character for the most part in this book and of course, he is still the love interest of our main character even if she has just broken up with him at the beginning.
The civilians of the planet have been evacuated and the fleet that they have been rescued by has started to head back to the waypoint Heimdall that has a warp point for them to be able to get to the core. Things happen that keep the pages turning. Putting the book down is hard once things start getting really good. The Artificial Intelligence computer system starts making things become even more interesting and I am trying my best not to give spoilers. The numerous amount of people in the book starts off as many and then it dwindles down drastically.
Ezra Mason is an amazing character. He puts the fun into everything there is when it comes to this book. When it takes a turn for serious you can be sure he's not far around the corner to relieve some of that tension that you can cut with a knife. He pushes the limits just as much as she does but not quite to the same extent that she does. He is one of the few characters in this book that I really wanted.
I will admit that the last two to three hundred pages I flew through them. I loved the way that this story was told. The IMs. The files. The amazing way that the pages were written out. The storytelling in this book is amazingly done and I give the storytelling a 5 out of 5. The second installment to follow this is called Gemina. If you have not picked up this book yet I strongly suggest you do. I had never read a sci-fi book until I picked up this book. If you have not picked up anything that is Sci-Fi and you are unsure where to start. If you do not mind Young Adult then you should give this book a chance.
