It's that time where we talk about what we read for the month and wouldn't you know I got some decent reading in. It's amazing. Here we are February 1st and it's time to go over the books that I read during the month of January. I read 7 books total between novels and manga. So let's just go ahead and jump right into it.
Aurora Rising
by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Book 1 of 3
Page Count: 480
Published: May 7, 2019
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Synopsis:
Synopsis:
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.
My Overview:
This book has been on my TBR for what feels like a very long time now. I was happy that I was finally able to sit down and read it. I mean I had tried to sit down and read it a few times but I always had a hard time sticking to it and I think a lot of that had to do with the book copy. However, that is neither here nor there.
I enjoyed the book. Ruby was a child when this started and by the time that she was older she had learned to make her life easy. Her powers were frightening and exciting all at the same time. They terrified her and they should have. You watch her make several mistakes by the end of the book. I have not watched the movie yet but I am not going to have high hopes for it.
The book was fast paced once you got much further into the book. Truth be told I almost did not pick this back up but I found it on Kindle Unlimited to read and I jumped at it. ONce I had that copy there was no stopping me.
The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Vol. 1
by Aya Shouoto
Book 1 of ...
Page Count: 172
Published: July 7, 2015
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Synopsis:
Himari Momochi inherits a mysterious house that comes with its own gorgeous demon guardian.
On her sixteenth birthday, orphan Himari Momochi inherits her ancestral estate that she's never seen. Momochi House exists on the barrier between the human and spiritual realms, and Himari is meant to act as guardian between the two worlds. But on the day she moves in, she finds three handsome squatters already living in the house, and one seems to have already taken over her role!
My Opinion:
I was trying to find more manga to read that didn't seem so bad. I needed something easy because for some reason I was starting to have issues with a reading slump. I just wanted something that would help with it and manga is a quick and easy read. It did help as I read a few more manga after this.
A Court of Thorns and Roses
by Sarah J. Maas
Book 1 of ...
Page Count: 419
Published: May 5, 2015
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Synopsis:
Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price ...
Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.
My Opinion:
This is more of a re-read for me. I really enjoyed this book the first time that I read the book. I could not put it down. On several occasions during the first read through my husband would come home to find me asleep with the book because I didn't put it down because I fell asleep while reading.
I spent so much time avoiding social media when this book came out that I had to read it before joining the social media world once again. I could not get enough of this book fast enough. The same holds true for this second time through the book. This time I did do it as an audiobook. The reason for this is because I can spend a great deal of time driving.
When I have to go to the middle school my son attends a round trip is thirty minutes and when I make that drive twice a day that's an hour of time that is used to have the book playing. I really enjoyed listening to the book this time around. I plan to finish listening to the rest of the books as soon as I get the chance this year.
Black

Page Count: 277
Published: January 29th, 2016
Rating: 3 Out of 5 Stars
Synopsis:
I am loyal, but I will betray you. I am strong, but I have scars. I am an angel, but the devil. I met her when I was sixteen and she was a breath of fresh air. She swooped in, making me smile. But then she left, taking my next breath with her. Her smile could light up a room, making my black heart pitter patter. I found her again ten years later, with a syringe in her arm. Blood coming from between her legs. She was broken and I was glad she was broken. She wouldn't think less of me and my damaged ways.
My Opinion:
This book got me started in my Spicy reads. I was not upset with the book but nor was I completely excited by the book. I was moderately content with it. As I did read this early into the year I am having difficult moments recalling sections of the book. However, I do remember the book ending on a cliff hanger and I won't lie I'm not terribly thrilled with the fact that it ended on a cliff hanger. I was hoping to be able to get the next book through kindle unlimited but that was not an option. Maybe at some point I will buy these books but that was not an option at the time. However, a good read over all.
Aurora Rising
by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Book 1 of 3
Page Count: 480
Published: May 7, 2019
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Synopsis:
From the New York Times and internationally bestselling authors of the Illuminae Files comes a new science fiction epic . . .
The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the academy would touch . . .
A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass tech whiz with the galaxy's biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger-management issues
A tomboy pilot who's totally not into him, in case you were wondering
And Ty's squad isn't even his biggest problem--that'd be Aurora Jie-Lin O'Malley, the girl he's just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler's squad of losers, discipline cases, and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.
NOBODY PANIC.
My Opinion:
Once again I feel like these guys have knocked it out of the park. I enjoyed every bit of reading that I had with this. I loved the characters and enjoyed every moment that they were pushed through hoop after hoop. I did have the occasional issue with some of the characters as they felt flat but that quickly changed the further you get into the story. They each care about each other. I did have issues with the pilot several times because while it seems like she cares about her squad I feel like she's more about saving her own skin than the skin of her squad mates. Again I loved this and enjoy every moment of it.

Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits, Vol. 1

Page Count: 200
Published: January 1, 2019
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Faced with the choice of being married to a strange spirit or being made into dinner, Aoi decides to create a third option for herself!
Aoi Tsubaki inherited her grandfather’s ability to see spirits—and his massive debt to them! Now she’s been kidnapped and taken to Kakuriyo, the spirit world, to make good on his bill. Her options: marry the head of the inn her grandfather trashed, or get eaten by ayakashi. But Aoi isn’t the type to let spirits push her around, and she’s determined to redeem her grandfather’s IOU on her own terms!
Aoi wants to work off her debt to the Tenjin-ya inn, but she only has one day to find a position and none of the managers are willing to hire a human! If she can just get someone to see past her family background, Aoi is certain she can prove her worth!
My opinion:
Think of it like Beauty and the Beast because that is close to what this is like. I enjoyed every moment reading it and I won't even begin to tell you that I didn't start reading this because of the fact that I watched the anime first. I was determined to start reading this. I sat down and started reading the second one as well because why not I was able to find it. I highly recommend this set of manga if you have not read this one yet.
